Looking for a new house in Geelong? Charity house project to help Casey and Bluey!

casey-bluey-house-geelong

Big-hearted tradesmen are banding together to build a house for footballers Tim “Bluey” McGrath and Casey Tutungi.

Taking shape at Warralily Coast at Armstrong Creek, it is already testimony to a groundswell of community kindness and concern, and its sale price at auction in November will be split down the middle to support the pair as they face life challenges.

Geelong champ McGrath is having treatment for stage three melanoma.

Former VFL Cat and South Barwon joint coach Tutungi is doing rehabilitation after suffering quadriplegia as a result of an on-field accident.

Geelong Amateur Football and Netball Club president and Shojun Concrete director Simon Farrell said plans for the house had taken shape rapidly since floating of an idea during a conversation with Warralily director Sean Duke over a beer at Ammos headquarters on July 25.

McGrath’s three daughters play netball for the club.

Mr Farrell followed up the conversation next morning with a call to Urbanedge Homes director Steve Maher.

“He said whatever you need, bang. So it’s all grown from there,” he said.

Mr Farrell acknowledged many community causes deserved support but this one had been particularly close to his club’s heart.

He said support and donations from all quarters, from Geelong Football Club to tradies and suppliers, had been rapid and affirming.

The house will sell fully landscaped, with legal costs covered and he hopes to include some furnishings as part of the package.

Bob Gartland, of Gartland Real Estate, will auction the property at 11am on November 23.

His firm and suppliers will donate expertise, services, marketing and waive commission.

“We could think of nothing better to put our time and energy into,” Mr Gartland said.

The house, at 211 Rainford Place, will have four bedrooms, double garage, theatre room, large open living and alfresco areas.

“It has been designed to sell,” Mr Gartland said.

“The whole notion of building a four-bedroom home with open-plan living is going to appeal to a large cross-section of the market and it is squarely in the centre of the Armstrong Creek development precinct.”

Urbanedge director Mr Maher promised the house would match the company’s hallmark standards.

Keep an eye out on Casey’s website for weekly updates on the house build.

Brothers In Arms – Troy and Casey Tutungi

Casey-Troy-Research

As soon as Simon Daly heard the news about his friend and colleague Casey Tutungi’s tragic football accident this season, the Falls Music Festival founder knew he could do something to help.

Mr Daly, Casey’s brother Troy, some of the biggest names in Australian music and a swag of volunteers are staging a full day music festival at Simonds Stadium this weekend.

A Show for Casey will see You Am I Allstars, Paul Dempsey, Regurgitator, Missy Higgins, Lisa Mitchell, Adalita, Dan Sultan, The Bamboos and Yacht Club DJ’s hit the stage the day after the Grand Final, with all ticket sales going towards Casey’s rehabilitation.

Casey suffered a severe spinal injury in an on-field collision and has been working hard in rehabilitation, as well as continuing to co-coach his team South Barwon, which won the GFL grand final on the weekend.

The support from Mr Daly, the local Lorne community, football clubs and businesses across the nation have continued to pour in, through club events, fundraisers and tin rattles.

Casey’s father Chris Tutungi said it had been amazing, and that all the love and support they had received helped the family stay strong.
“When tragic things happen, at the beginning you are very emotionally upset.

“To know people have been thinking about him, and to have that support then, and going forward, if it could have made Casey better, he’d be better now.
“The footy clubs, and all the people putting their hand up for different roles, a lot of people have said yes, and it has been fantastic and absolutely amazing, the support for Casey, to us as a family, we are very grateful.”

The Falls Festival Community Fund has contributed $16,000 and the Lorne Lions Club $5,000 towards the staging of A Show for Casey.

Lions Club president Stephen Hishon said “the Tutungi family are true community givers and we hope our contribution can help Casey find new ways to improve his body, which in turn will give hope and countless opportunities to thousands of people with disabilities around the world.”

Chris Tutungi said following the big weekend of finals football, if Casey’s health was up to it, he would be there, as he has been looking forward to hearing the performances of some of his favourite bands.

“He wants to thank the artists and bands there, and thank everyone who has helped. It’s such a good vibe at these concerts, it will be a great day.”

A Show for Casey is a licensed, all ages event, children 12 and under and people in wheelchairs and their carers are admitted for free.

For tickets ($50 plus booking fee) head to ashowforcasey.com. Tickets are also available from Ghanda stores and at Simonds Stadium.

Gates open at midday September 29.

All profits go to the Casey Tutungi Appeal.

The Swans do it for Casey Tutungi

casey-south-barwon-feature

south barwon casey with cup The Swans do it for Casey Tutungi

QUADRIPLEGIC co-coach Casey Tutungi spoke in little more than a whisper to the lads standing with arms laced in a circle of strength around his wheelchair.

The summit of an extraordinary season was within view and with a perspective shaped by a life so radically changed he implored them to do one thing.

“Take the opportunity,” he said to his South Barwon players, and the power inherent in his words could not be lost.

Out on the ground the Swans held it all within their hearts as they defied repeated challenges from a gallant and gutsy Grovedale in a Geelong Football League grand final laden with emotion.

Grovedale was striving to complete the rare and epic journey from bottom rung to premiership within the space of one storied season.

South Barwon was striving to complete a mission for the joint coach and teammate whose approach to life with quadriplegia, following an on-field accident in June, has inspired all those around him.

As players acted out their heroics out on the ground, a banner running 10m along the Reg Hickey Stand fence in South Barwon’s red, white and blue shouted what it was all about.

“#SPIRIT” it read, referring to Tutungi’s nickname from days playing with Geelong’s VFL outfit and pointing also to so much in a man that defies definition.

Tutungi is undergoing treatment at Kew’s Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre and the fact he was even at the final was itself a triumph.

With regulation of his body temperature a constant challenge, he analysed the game from the AFL coaches’ box but steered his way on to the ground at each break to share advice with groups of players.

Their intent focus on his words was clear.

On the scoreboard Grovedale refused to go away.

The Tigers pursued their opponents like heat-seeking missiles, defending with valour, attacking with daring.

Fans roared and chanted for them from the stands and, as all of the season crystallised during a hectic last quarter, the side was just unable to contain an outfit bristling with match-winners and fuelled by something profound.

After the siren Swans players mustered near the middle of the ground in celebration, surrounded by their families and fans.

Tutungi took several minutes to join them as he made his way down from the stand.

Chaperone and mate Mark Enright shouted out to draw players’ attention to his arrival at the edge of the throng and players rushed to him in an emotional embrace.

They sang, they rejoiced. They were at the summit.

“He’s been an inspiration to our playing group,” Swans defender and Geelong Cats champion Matthew Scarlett said.

“Even him being down here today just lifts the boys. He’s such an incredible, positive person. Love him.

“We were thinking about him all day.

“We dedicated the season to him and we didn’t want to let him down.”

Tutungi’s coaching partner, James Garvey, looked back to initial visits to Tutungi after he had emerged from intensive care in Melbourne.

“Incredible bloke to stay involved in coaching the football club from day dot and that’s all he wanted to do,” Garvey said as he peeled tape from his wrists in the rooms after the game.

“Ever since he came out of intensive care and into the hospital he just wanted to make sure everything was still in place.”

south barwon casey The Swans do it for Casey TutungiGarvey visited Tutungi every Monday and Friday and phoned midweek to talk team and tactics.

“Most of the boys got up there and every single one of them walked out of there feeling better about themselves because of the way he’s approaching things,” Garvey said. “He’s so positive and all he’d talk to them about was footy and how everything’s going in their life rather than worrying about himself.”

Garvey said Tutungi had insisted on attending the Swans’ second semi as his first game back to avoid any distraction of team focus on the grand final.

“I think what he did is he galvanised this group,” Garvey said. “You could see there wasn’t a lot going right for us out there and for this group to stick tight like they did and just keep coming I think is a reflection of the respect they have for him as a coach.”

Swans skipper and best afield medallist Anthony Biemans described Tutungi as determined, inspiring and respectful.

“We hold it really tight. Before the game was pretty emotional with him here,” Biemans said.

“We didn’t want to lose with him here and we wanted to win it for him, and we did.”

Tutungi’s reward was sharing pride, achievement and triumph with his teammates, and in having the hefty premiership cup placed in his lap.

“It’s a pretty emotional day. It sort of builds up and builds up,” Tutungi said.

“Then you get to the result and it is just sort of a relief in a way. I’m just rapt for the boys.”

Tutungi said making the most of every opportunity was so important.

“Not many players get to play in grannys. Some players don’t get that chance during their career, so it’s a big part about any grand final, making the most of it,” he said. They did.

His family was around him during the day, his partner, Bridget Ure, by his side, and his brother, Troy, spent the day manning a stall inside the Bob Davis gate pointing to next weekend’s Show for Casey money-raiser concert at Simonds Stadium, offering an Australian music A-list for a mere $50 a ticket.

Concert organiser Simon Daly said he would fine-tune planning with the City of Greater Geelong this week, with the Cats’ exit from the finals likely to free up opportunities including increased parking.

As Troy Tutungi and Mr Daly spoke, pint-sized kids came up and dropped coins into collection tins. Casey’s story has captured hearts of all sizes.

Over behind the #SPIRIT sign a woman who preferred not to be named reflected on what Tutungi embodied and his journey within the space of a few months.

“He’s like a pillar of strength,” she said.

“It’s amazing how someone can see their future and be so positive and optimistic.

“You can’t ever let go of hope.”

Casey Tutungi Appeal receives $22,293 boost.

Casey-Tutungi-Appeal-Donation

As a result of the Round 18 match-worn guernsey auction, the Club and the playing list together with the generosity of our loyal members and supporters raised $22,293 for the Casey Tutungi Appeal.

The 22 players who represented Hawthorn in the Round 18 win over Essendon generously donated their playing guernseys, and signed them post-match to raise funds for Tutungi, who is now a quadriplegic as a result of a football injury.

Hawthorn midfielder Jonathan Simpkin and rookie-listed player Andrew Boseley, both former teammates of Tutungi personally presented him with the cheque last week.

All funds generated by the sale of the guernseys was donated to the Casey Tutungi Appeal, to the sum of $22,293.

Casey’s back in school?

GFL Sth Barwon V St Mary's - Casey Tutungi gets grabbed
Barwon Case 196x300 Caseys back in school?

Casey in action with the South Barwon Football Club.

Well no, he’s not back in school but Primary school students from all over the Geelong region are gearing up for some great fundraising events this coming Friday. In support of the Casey Tutungi Appeal schools such as Montpellier and Bellaire Primary are holding the spectacle we all know and love…… The student/ teacher footy match! The only chance the students will get to gang tackle the principal or take a speccy over the Maths teacher. Wearing their respective football and netball uniforms from home the kids will also be highlighting grass roots clubs in the region. Belmont Primary held a similar event earlier in the week and according to their principal raised almost $1000 for the Casey Tutungi Appeal.

274052 matthew scarlett 300x168 Caseys back in school?

Matty Scarlett continues to fly the flag for South Barwon team mate Case and the Casey Tutungi Appeal. Primary schools in the Geelong region will be benefiting from his umpiring skills as they take to the field this Friday in their Student/ Teacher Football Matches.

Players beware of taking their principals high though! Once again Matty Scarlett, Three times premiership player, six times All Australian and South Barwon team mate of Casey will be turning up, not only to address school assemblies, but umpire the footy matches. He was on hand earlier in the week to address Belmont Primary and sources say he has a keen eye for rough and unfair play with a whistle he isn’t afraid of using if he see’s anything unruly.

So for some entertaining footy and to support the Primary Schools fundraising efforts for the Casey Tutungi Appeal get along this Friday to their respective matches. For information on where and when keep an eye on the events page here at CaseyTutungi.com.
